Short Notice Bulletin

NPA members can subscribe to a regular bushwalks enewsletter, the 'Short Notice Bulletin', which includes additional information on walks organised post printing of the Activities Program and notification of late changes. Bulletins are sent at least every 1–2 weeks but sometimes more frequently. Click here to subscibe online.

Grading system for NPA walks

The NPA has adopted guidelines provided by the Confederation of Bushwalking Clubs NSW for its grading system. Where possible this system is complemented by specific reference to three other factors – total distance (km); Ascent/descent (m) for grade 3 and above walks; and reference to the type of terrain and any specific hazards on the walk.

Potential hazards on activities

Whilst walks vary greatly in difficulty, dangers such as poor weather, river crossings, rock climbing and other hazards can be encountered and cannot always be anticipated. Participants on NPA activities must ensure that they have adequate fitness levels to complete the walk and that they are suitably equipped. Participants must also make sure that they are aware of the conditions likely to be encountered and have adequate experience for the activity which they intend to undertake. If in doubt, participants should speak with the walks leader or the Activities Coordinator for further information.

Bookings

Where contact details are supplied, please give reasonable notice to the walks leaders if you wish to join an activity. People leading activities for NPA do so on a voluntary basis and may decline any person’s request to attend. The leader’s permission must also be obtained before bringing children on activities. Please be mindful of any restrictions of the times at which leaders wish to be contacted. Where it is stated ‘no need to contact’, please contact the Activities Coordinator if you have any queries on This email address is being protected from spambots. Cancellation of bookings

If you need to cancel a walk after booking, please let walks leader know as soon as possible.

Insurance and trial walks

National Parks Association NSW (NPA) members are covered by NPA walks insurance during NPA walks and other outdoor activities. Member’s guests and prospective members are also covered under this insurance policy, but under NPA policy non-members are only covered for a maximum of two activities.

Liability

Every person participating in an activity conducted by the National Parks Association of NSW Inc. does so as a volunteer in all respects, and as such accepts responsibility for any personal injury, however incurred. The Association, its office bearers and walks leaders cannot accept liability in regard to any injury or damage suffered by any person while engaged in any NPA activity.

Participation by children

Children under 18 years old are welcome to attend NPA activities only:
if accompanied and supervised by their own parent/carer at all times; and if accepted prior to the day by the walks leader, who will determine whether the activity is appropriate for them. Activities specifically designed for young children (under 8 years) are noted with a ‘good for kids’ icon.

Paddling activity requirements

To attend an NPA activity involving paddling (usually in kayaks), all participants must:

  • Provide their own equipment including suitable craft, paddle, dry bags etc, unless stated otherwise in the individual activity listing; carry a PFD for themselves at all times;
  • Have prior personal experience paddling a kayak or similar craft;
  • Be fit enough to maintain a steady paddling pace over the full advertised distance (to keep up with the group);
  • And advise the leader if they are not a strong swimmer.
