The National Parks Association of NSW (NPA) strongly condemns the proposed Game and Feral Animal Legislation (Conservation Hunting) Bill, which closely resembles the now defunct NSW Game Council, warning it would undermine conservation efforts and repeat past failures.
NPA CEO Gary Dunnett said “This Bill, introduced by Shooters, Fishers and Farmers Party MLC Robert Borsak, is nothing more than a rebranded version of the discredited Game Council, which was abolished in 2013 following serious governance concerns.
“It is deeply disappointing that the NSW Government appears to be buying into the myth that recreational hunting is an effective way of controlling the feral animal crisis impacting our biodiversity.
“This Bill won’t deliver significant reductions in invasive species. It’s a step backwards for biodiversity and a gift to vested interests who have consistently opposed effective environmental protections.
“The ill-named ‘Conservation Hunting Authority’ isn’t about eradicating damaging feral animals — it will simply follow the same path as its predecessor and impede genuine conservation action.” concluded Mr Dunnett.
NPA is calling on the NSW Government to reject the Bill and reaffirm its commitment to science-led, conservation practices implemented by specialist professionals with the authority to use the most appropriate techniques, including baiting and aerial shooting.
