It’s not surprising that attention on nature conservation in Australia is focused on the 8% of the total land area of the country that is reserved for conservation purposes. But what about the much larger proportion, 54% of the total, that is used for livestock grazing? Smaller proportions are used for other forms of agriculture (4%), and forestry (2%).

The Federal Court of Australia made a consent determination in 2007 recognising the Githabul People’s Native Title rights and interests over 1,120 km2, in 9 National Parks and 13 State Forests, in the headwaters of the Richmond and Clarence Rivers in north-east NSW.

On 16 August, the NSW Government released its draft plan to protect the Hawkesbury Shelf marine bioregion through the creation of a new marine park. The marine park, based on the Sydney Harbour National Park model, was to be made up of a network of 25 sites to be managed under three zones: sanctuary zones, new conservation zones and special purpose zones.

Citizen scientists from all over Sydney have been collecting data on the charismatic Eastern Water Dragon with ROARING success! Water Dragons are an impressive semi-aquatic lizard found near fresh water and patches of bushland along the eastern coast of Australia. Full of character, and found at sizes up to a metre long, they are a much loved native species and perfect candidate to study the effect of urbanisation on native species. The ‘Dragons of Sydney’ project aimed to inspire, educate and increase community involvement in the conservation of Eastern Water Dragons.
