Visiting Nature’s Gifts

Dr Graeme L. Worboys AM is an Honorary Associate Professor at the Fenner School of Environment and Society, Australian National University & Bruce Gall is a former Director of the Queensland National Parks and Wildlife Service.

This is the sixth article in an 8-part series discussing our nature’s gifts.

A decade of biennial visitor surveys by Roy Morgan Research confirms the continuing rise in popularity of NSW national parks, from 38 million domestic visits in 2008 to 60 million in 2018, the latter figure a 17% increase over 2016. Expenditure associated with this increase has been a boon to regional economies. City visitors and country businesses are a potentially powerful constituency in support of our national parks and their nature’s gifts.

Vale Nature Champions

Vale Dr Graeme Worboys AM

We note with sadness the recent passing of Dr Graeme Worboys AM.  Graeme’s extraordinary career reached the most senior levels in the National Parks and Wildlife before moving into academic and advocacy roles that saw him become an internationally acclaimed expert in protected area management.  His publications have influenced conservation management on the international stage, while this year’s “Kosciusko- A great national park” stands as testimony to his knowledge and passion for the Australian Alps.  A giant of conservation and friend to NPA who will be sorely missed.

This is THE BOOK on Kosciuszko National Park (KNP) for all those who know and love it and would like to understand it better in order to promote its protection. Graeme Worboys has spent his professional career working in and around KNP and both authors have extensive personal knowledge of the park. Graeme Worboys AM started as a NSW NPWS Kosciuszko ranger and now is a protected area management specialist. Deirdre Slattery is a historian and has written extensively about the Alpine Parks and contributed widely to community education about them. Together they have produced a book which is both authoritative and an inspiration to read.
