Snowy Hydro predicts electricity prices will rise due to Snowy 2.0

A Snowy Hydro report recently discovered by National Parks Association of NSW, predicts that Snowy 2.0 will actually push electricity prices higher, not lower as claimed by Snowy Hydro.

Yesterday’s Environmental Impact Statement for Snowy 2.0 proposes a completely unacceptable level of damage to Kosciusko National Park.

The National Parks Association of NSW (NPA) has expressed complete dismay at the severe and permanent impacts on Kosciusko National Park signalled by yesterday’s release of the Environmental Impact Statement (EIS) for the Snowy 2.0 ‘Main Works’.

On 15 March 2017, then Prime Minister Malcolm Turnbull announced that his government “will start work on an electricity game-changer … Snowy Mountains Scheme 2.0 … adding 2,000 MW of renewable energy to the National Electricity Market …making renewables reliable, filling in holes caused by intermittent supply and generator outages … enabling greater energy efficiency and … ultimately mean cheaper power prices.”

The human impact on Kosciuszko National Park (KNP) also continues unabated, with the Federal and NSW Coalition Governments committing to the construction of Snowy Hydro 2.0. While supporting renewable energy like pumped hydro in principle, NPA opposes the development of this type of infrastructure within national parks. In early March, the NSW Planning Minister declared Snowy Hydro 2.0 Critical State Significant Infrastructure, with a Legislative Council Inquiry into the order being held in May. NPA made a submission to the inquiry and appeared as an expert witness. NPA is also preparing a submission in response to the recently released Environmental Impact Statement for Snowy Hydro 2.0 Exploratory Works.
