If you draw a circle around Sydney, half of it is native bushland. This is extraordinary, and a big surprise to many Sydneysiders. This proximity to such large areas of native bushland is true for many cities and large towns across NSW, making this state unique in Australia and internationally. There are many benefits and issues that come from having so many protracted areas in our backyards.
Government environment announcements welcome but must herald policy shifts to be meaningful
The National Parks Association of NSW (NPA) has cautiously welcomed today’s announcements by the Berejiklian government, but warns that policy settings must change in order to reverse recent wind-backs in environmental protection.

The ‘Wild Wild Inner West’ project launched with a pub talk event run as part of the Sydney Science Festival in August. The pub talk had ecologists and biologists from the University of Sydney and the University of New South Wales discuss urban ecology and urban nature in the City of Sydney and Inner West Council Local Government Areas.
An ambitious citizen science survey has reconfirmed previous research demonstrating the importance of urban natural habitat in supporting bird diversity in suburban areas.
Over a thousand people from across Australia participated in the summer Bathing Birds survey developed by the National Parks Association of NSW, in partnership with Birds in Backyards and the University of Sydney.
