In response to the release of the ‘NSW biodiversity outlook report 2024’ the National Parks Association of NSW is calling on the Minns Labor Government to get serious about stopping runaway clearing of native vegetation for agriculture, forestry and infrastructure development.
‘NSW Labor committed to reforming nature laws in Opposition, yet more than a year later we see the disastrous impact of allowing the Coalition’s land clearing legislation to remain in operation. This Government’s own report makes the cost of that inaction clear, with fully half of our threatened species on track to become extinct within a century as a result of escalating land clearing’ stated NPA CEO Gary Dunnett.
‘The frustrating thing is that we all know what needs to be done: stop the clearing and get serious about environmental restoration and protection. Australia is a signatory to the Global Biodiversity Framework, which includes commitments to manage at least 30% of land and seas for biodiversity conservation, with active restoration programs across at least 30% of all ecosystems. The NSW biodiversity outlook tells us that barely 29% of our state is left under native vegetation. All the wiggle room has gone, it is time to get serious about protecting the future of this State’.
‘The current NSW ministries and departments separate biodiversity and environment from the regulation of native vegetation, forests and fisheries, inviting unproductive rivalry and wrangling. We need a Premier who is prepared to step into the driving seat and make the protection of our remaining biodiversity the overwhelming priority for this government.’
