And we’d love to know who YOU think has made an exceptional contribution to NPA. As a voluntary organisation, we depend on the time and skills contributed by members. But to be vibrant and resilient into the future, we need to maintain strong diversity across all our groups, while also openly acknowledging the great efforts that members selflessly perform.
Book Review: Kosciuszko: the Man Behind the Mountain

Kościuszko never set foot on the Australian continent. The mountain was named in 1840, long after his death, by Polish explorer Paul Strzelecki (1797-1873), in honour of his national hero, Tadeusz Kościuszko. Most Australian’s probably know little about him, so journalist and author Anthony Sharwood has done us a service in investigating the man and his times. Kościuszko was a truly significant engineer and political leader, involved in the American Revolution, and independence struggles in Poland. But how appropriate is the use of his name for our highest mountain?

Southern Forests Campaign Update

The proposed Great Southern Forests National Park is a bold step toward safeguarding one of southeastern Australia’s most ecologically valuable landscapes. In the wake of the Black Summer bushfires and mounting development pressures along the coast, the continuation of industrial logging in these forests is increasingly untenable. The proposal spans tall wet forests, rainforests, and woodlands across the south coast and hinterlands, aiming to protect their rich biodiversity and critical habitats. By connecting and consolidating existing protected areas, the park would strengthen ecological resilience and provide a vital refuge for forest-dependent species as climate change accelerates.
“No-take” Aquatic Reserves: NSW’s under-utilised marine protected area category

For several years, the National Parks Association of NSW has been fostering a community movement to see more “no-take” aquatic reserves established throughout NSW, through our efforts in the NSW Marine Sanctuary Alliance. With the rise of swimmer groups, the community desire to establish more aquatic reserves has never been stronger. They have seen the natural wonders of Cabbage Tree Bay Aquatic Reserve and so desire to replicate the thriving underwater scenery of marine life. Yet, there is a catch. Astonishingly, it has been 20 years since the last aquatic reserve was established in NSW.
