At the end of April NPA NSW members joined a memorial walk for the late Emeritus Professor Geoff Hope (Australian National University) to Dunn’s Flat, Kosciuszko NP. The walk organisers were Di Thompson and Linda Groom of NPA ACT and Reclaim Kosci.
Dr Graeme L. Worboys AM was a ranger with NSW NPWS (at Kosciuszko and Blue Mountains) & Bruce Gall was also a ranger with NSW NPWS (at Kosciuszko, Ku-ring-gai Chase and Sturt) and with ANPWS (at Kakadu).

On 6 May 2022, after years of proposals, campaigns and negotiations, the Gardens of Stone State Conservation Area was gazetted. Accompanying this were additions to Gardens of Stone National Park (NP) and Wollemi NP. This land is former State Forest that has been threatened by the impacts of mining. It is home to fabulous pagoda rock formations and diverse plants and animals.
This area has been popular with walkers for generations. The impacts of mining were first noticed in the 1980s, when cliffs were collapsing. In recent years there have been impacts on in-stream water quality, and cracking and draining of fragile upland swamps.

The Convention on Biological Diversity (CBD) is the international legal instrument for “the conservation of biological diversity, the sustainable use of its components and the fair and equitable sharing of the benefits arising out of the utilization of genetic resources” that has been ratified by 196 nations. It hopes to encourage actions that will lead to a sustainable future and considers that on three levels: ecosystems, species and genetic resources. That’s a big ask!
