On Friday 20th September 2019, millions of students all around the world gathered in their city centres. It wasn’t the first time, or the last time, they would gather. These students were protesting the inaction of governments around the world to address the causes and impacts of climate change.
September 20 was the largest of a series of strikes, lead by 16 year old Greta Thunberg, and one joined by many adults; parents and supporters alike.
The responses by leaders around the world was generally disappointing, with our own Prime Minister saying Australia was already doing enough, and that children should stay at school.
The strike was followed a few days later by Greta Thunberg’s address to the UN. While passionate, it was dismissed as a fit of hysterics by many world leaders, Justin Trudeau being one of the few exceptions. Few people remember that Greta had addressed the UN Climate Change COP24 a year previously. Her speech was clear and calm. If politicians won’t do anything, then her generation will. Change is coming.
