Honouring a Lifetime for Nature: A Farewell to Gary Dunnett

Liz Jeremy, President NPA NSW

As Gary Dunnett prepares for a well-earned retirement, the National Parks Association of NSW (NPA) pauses to reflect on an extraordinary career dedicated to protecting the state’s natural heritage. Gary’s tenure as NPA’s Chief Executive Officer marks the culmination of decades of tireless advocacy, public service, and deep personal commitment to conservation across New South Wales.

Before stepping into leadership at NPA, Gary spent many years serving on the front lines of public land management with the NSW National Parks and Wildlife Service (NPWS). His time inside government equipped him with a rare, insider’s understanding of conservation policy, park operations, and ecological management. When he transitioned to leading NPA, he brought that invaluable depth of experience to the community conservation movement.

Gary’s background with NPWS allowed him to bridge the gap between grassroots advocacy and state government decision-making. He understood not only what needed to be protected, but how the mechanisms of government could be navigated to make lasting conservation wins a reality. Under his guidance, NPA maintained a reputation for high-level technical credibility, pragmatic policy engagement, and advocacy, qualities that earned the respect of allies, agency leaders, and decision-makers alike.

Throughout his time at NPA, Gary spearheaded critical efforts to expand and safeguard NSW’s protected area network. From advocating for new national parks and marine protected areas to navigating complex national policy debates, such as the creation of the Great Koala National Park, Gary served as a steady, strategic, and principled voice for nature.

Beyond his policy acumen, Gary’s leadership was defined by his deep respect for NPA’s long heritage, its passionate branch network, and its proud tradition of bushwalking. He recognised that the strength of the organisation lies in its community, consistently working to support members, staff, and volunteers in their shared mission to protect the places they love.

As Gary steps down, he leaves behind a legacy written directly into the landscapes of New South Wales. The entire NPA family extends its heartfelt gratitude to Gary for his vision, leadership, and unwavering dedication. We wish him all the very best in his next chapter, no doubt filled with well-deserved time exploring the very parks and wild places he spent his career protecting!
